Ado Matter

Ado Matter aims to support fifty pregnant girls and young mothers between the ages of 14 and 19 each year. Teenage pregnancies represent a major public health problem in Cameroon. They are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates among these very young mothers and their children, thereby negatively impacting the socioeconomic development of the entire country.

Thanks to the support of Cents for Help eV, five young mothers and their children can receive care, giving them all the chance for a better future.

Ado Matter aims to support and accompany pregnant girls and young mothers between the ages of 14 and 19. Given the shockingly high rates of violence against women in Cameroon, we consider these young women and girls to be a particularly vulnerable group. The Dr. Gnipieven Tekombo Medical Center offers these girls and young women prenatal care, obstetric care, postnatal support, sexual education, and childcare over a period of four years. The program also offers the opportunity to learn a profession in the healthcare or construction sectors.

Adolescent pregnancy represents a major public health problem in Cameroon. High rates of disease (including HIV, hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases) and mortality among very young mothers and their children are negatively impacting the socioeconomic development of the entire country.

The project offers the young mothers health support and the opportunity to learn a trade, thus avoiding a precarious life situation. The Dr. Gnipieven Tekombo Medical Center Foundation collaborates with the Campus Pro Afrique Centrale vocational training center, which is responsible for providing vocational training.

The Ado Matter project is supported by a group of highly motivated volunteers in Africa and Europe. They contribute their expertise, generous donations, and time to help these girls.

Special mention should be made of the support of Prof. Dr. Nicole Probst-Hensch, Head of the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at Swiss TPH, as well as of Mr. Yannick Noah, world-class tennis star, successful artist, philanthropist and traditional chief of the Beti tribe in the village of Etoudi, north of Yaoundé, who has assumed patronage of the project.

The disposal system

A New Standard for Medical Waste Management in Cameroon

In Cameroon, the disposal of medical waste has long been a major challenge. Many hospitals previously discarded their waste as though it were household garbage, and in Yaoundé there was no dedicated system for the responsible, environmentally sound treatment of hospital waste.

At the Centre Médical Dr. Gnipieven Tekombo Foundation, we have changed this. Our medical center has been built with a comprehensive, international-standard waste management system that prioritizes public health, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Separation and Safe Handling

To meet strict infection control and hygiene standards, the medical center will implement a waste separation and disposal system. This approach classifies and manages waste in four key categories:

  • Household-type Waste

  • Hospital-specific Waste

  • Infectious or High-risk Waste

  • Environmentally Hazardous Waste

By clearly separating each type, we minimize risks and ensure each category receives the correct treatment.

On-Site Incineration & Responsible Disposal

Our facility includes its own incineration and disposal plant, located on the hospital grounds. This system allows us to take direct responsibility for the environmentally friendly and compliant destruction of medical waste — reducing dependence on inadequate external systems and protecting surrounding communities.

Collaboration for a Cleaner Future

The development of this innovative system was carried out in close collaboration with local engineers in Ngaoundéré. Beyond serving our own medical center, we have begun sharing this responsible waste disposal model with other clinics across Cameroon. By offering this critical waste management service, we are helping to improve public health standards and create a lasting, positive impact on the environment.

The Hospital Information System

Smart Planning for Better Care

At the Centre Médical Dr. Gnipieven Tekombo Foundation, our commitment to quality healthcare begins long before the first patient walks through the door. From the planning stage, we are focused on making the best possible decisions to meet each person’s individual needs — and digital innovation is at the heart of this approach.

A New Digital Era for Healthcare in Cameroon

In partnership with a Cameroonian start-up, the Foundation has developed a state-of-the-art Hospital Information System (HIS) — a digital management platform designed specifically for our medical center. This pioneering system has already transformed how we:

  • Streamline Hospital Processes – making administration more transparent and efficient.

  • Support Medical Staff – enabling quicker and more accurate diagnoses.

  • Collect & Analyze Health Data – providing reliable statistics on diseases and treatments to guide preventive work.

Rare Innovation in Cameroon

Such integrated digital systems remain rare in Africa, and especially in Cameroon. By introducing an HIS at our facility, we have set a new standard for modern healthcare delivery — one that improves patient outcomes, reduces errors, and enhances operational efficiency.

Better Care, Lower Costs

With accurate diagnostics and optimized workflows, patients are now treated more effectively and efficiently, reducing the risk of misdiagnoses and treatment errors. The center initially focused on outpatient treatments, ensuring people could access appropriate medical care quickly and affordably. This approach has helped limit long inpatient stays, which are often costly for both hospitals and patients.

A System That Works for Everyone

The Hospital Information System now assists our medical staff and enables the Foundation to monitor, optimize, and control medical treatments. This has led to higher-quality care, better prevention strategies, and lower costs overall — a major step forward in transforming healthcare delivery in Cameroon.
